Fall Deep Cleaning Checklist: Get Your North Shore Home Ready for Thanksgiving

Fall Deep Cleaning Checklist: Get Your North Shore Home Ready for Thanksgiving

Fall on the North Shore is beautiful, but it's hard on a house. Leaves and wet sand get tracked in from outside, the windows close for the season, the heat comes on, and suddenly the whole family is coming over for Thanksgiving. A good fall deep clean resets your home before all of that, so the holidays feel calm instead of rushed.

Below is a room-by-room fall deep cleaning checklist, a shortcut list for when you're short on time, and how to know when it makes sense to hand the job to a professional.

When to start your fall deep clean

Aim for the first two weeks of November. That leaves time for the big jobs before Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26 this year) and saves the final week for a quick touch-up before guests arrive. If you'd rather book a professional holiday deep clean, reach out two to three weeks ahead, since the days right before the holidays are popular.

The fall deep cleaning checklist, room by room

Entryway and mudroom

  • Shake out or wash doormats, and put a heavier mat outside for wet leaves and boots.
  • Wipe down the front door, door handles and light switches.
  • Put away summer shoes and set up a boot tray for the wet months ahead.
  • Mop the floor and wipe the baseboards, where fall grit collects first.

Kitchen, before the Thanksgiving cooking marathon

  • Empty the fridge, toss anything expired, and wipe every shelf and drawer to make room for holiday food.
  • Clean the oven before the turkey goes in. Old spills smoke at high heat.
  • Degrease the range hood, its filter and the backsplash.
  • Wipe cabinet fronts and handles, and clear out the pantry.
  • Clean the dishwasher filter and run an empty cleaning cycle.
  • Wash the platters and serving dishes you only use for the holidays.

Living and dining rooms

  • Dust from the top down: ceiling fans and light fixtures first, then shelves, then furniture.
  • Switch ceiling fans to spin clockwise on low, which pushes warm air back down in the colder months.
  • Vacuum the couch cushions and underneath them, then the floors and rugs.
  • Wipe baseboards, window sills and door frames.
  • Polish the dining table and wash the table linens.

Bedrooms and guest rooms

  • Swap summer bedding for heavier blankets, and wash pillows and duvets.
  • Vacuum the mattress and under the bed.
  • Switch out seasonal clothes and donate what nobody wore this year.
  • Get the guest room ready early with fresh sheets, an empty drawer and clean towels.

Bathrooms

  • Scrub the grout, tile and shower door, and wash or replace the shower curtain liner.
  • Clean behind and around the base of the toilet.
  • Clear out expired products from cabinets and drawers.
  • Stock the guest bathroom with extra toilet paper, hand soap and towels.

Windows, heat and air

  • Wash the windows inside and vacuum the window tracks before you close them for the season.
  • Take down the screens, then wash and store them.
  • Dust radiators, baseboard heaters and vents before the heat runs full time, so you aren't heating up a season's worth of dust.
  • Check your furnace or HVAC filter and replace it if it's dirty.
  • Clean the dryer's lint trap and vent before you start drying heavier blankets and clothes.
  • When the clocks fall back, test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries.

Short on time? Do these five things first

  1. Clean out the fridge and oven.
  2. Deep clean the guest bathroom.
  3. Vacuum and mop every floor your guests will walk on.
  4. Dust the living and dining rooms from the top down.
  5. Clear the entryway and set out a boot tray.

Everything else can wait until after the holidays.

Deep cleaning vs. regular cleaning: what's the difference?

A regular cleaning keeps up with the surfaces you use every day, like counters, sinks, toilets, dusting and floors. A deep clean goes after everything a regular cleaning skips: baseboards, inside appliances, cabinet fronts, grout, light fixtures and the build-up in corners. Most homes benefit from a deep clean a couple of times a year, and fall is one of the best times to do it, right before the house fills up with family.

Fall cleaning FAQ

How long does a fall deep clean take?

It depends on the size and condition of your home. If you're doing it yourself, plan to spread the checklist over a few weekends. A professional team can usually handle a full deep clean in a single visit.

What should I clean before Thanksgiving?

Focus on the places guests actually spend time: the kitchen, the guest bathroom, the entryway, and the living and dining rooms. Clean the oven and fridge about a week ahead so they're ready for holiday cooking.

How far ahead should I book a holiday cleaning?

Two to three weeks before your event is a safe window. The days right before Thanksgiving and Christmas tend to book up first.

Do you offer holiday deep cleaning near me?

If you live in Beverly, Salem, Marblehead, Danvers, Peabody, Swampscott, Nahant, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Hamilton, Gloucester, Reading, Andover or North Andover, yes. Get a free quote and we'll find a time that works before your guests arrive.
